Remembering Ted Turner: A Man Who Proved That Greatness Can Still Serve Humanity

Remembering Ted Turner: A Man Who Proved That Greatness Can Still Serve Humanity

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ted Turner.

I had the opportunity to meet him for the first time many years ago at the home of Steve Forbes in New York City. What I still remember is not only his strong character, but also his face — warm, friendly, open, and inviting.

You could feel that this was a man who had lived fully, fought many battles, built many things, and still carried a deep human energy.

But in truth, I became a fan of Ted Turner long before I met him.

I still remember, as a student waking up one morning and watching on television as U.S. forces crossed into Iraq, with journalists reporting from close to the action. It was one of those moments when history was no longer something that happened far away and was explained later. It was happening live, in front of us.

Only later did I comprehend that this was part of Ted Turner’s revolution.

By creating CNN, the world’s first 24-hour global news network, he changed how the world receives information. He brought the world closer to itself — sometimes painfully, sometimes uncomfortably, but always with the belief that people should know what is happening.

That alone would have been a huge legacy.

But for me, what truly blew my mind was something else: his decision to donate up to US$1 billion to support United Nations causes.

This was not normal philanthropy. It was not a small donation given for image. It was a man standing up and saying: humanity matters.

He proved that wealth does not have to make a person smaller. It can make responsibility bigger.

And this is why his passing hurts even more in today’s world.

We live in a time where some billionaires seem to believe they deserve trillion-dollar bonuses, while the poor, the vulnerable, and ordinary people are asked to pay the price. In such a world, Ted Turner’s example matters even more.

He was not perfect. Nobody is. He had opponents, strong views, and controversies. But I do not remember him as someone who spent his life vilifying, threatening, or lying about people who opposed or criticized him.

He was strong without becoming cruel.

He was bold without becoming small.

He was controversial without losing his humanity.

His work through the United Nations Foundation, the Nuclear Threat Initiative, his conservation efforts, his climate advocacy, and his philanthropy were not side activities. They were part of who he was.

And this is also why he resonated so deeply with us at Impact Investing Solutions .

Ted Turner did not need the language of “impact investing” to act like an impact investor. He simply acted.

We are honored that Ted was a supporter of Impact Investing Solutions. I am personally grateful for the belief he showed in our mission. And I hope that my relationship with him and his family will continue through his partner.

But today is not about business. It is not even only about legacy.

Today is simply about loss.

Ted Turner will be severely missed in this world.

And he will be very deeply missed by me.

Rest in peace, Ted.

Thank you for showing that greatness can still have a human face.
